Record passenger number and further expansion at Memmingen Airport
Langen, 15 August 2019
Memmingen Airport, which is located in the pre-alpine region Allgäu in the south of Germany, has been highly popular among passengers from this region for years. Before the end of July 2019, the airport counted its millionth passenger.
1,492,553 passengers flew to and from Memmingen last year. This corresponds to an increase of 26.5 percent over the previous year. Approximately 1.65 million passengers are expected this year.
Since March, the expansion of the airport is progressing as planned. Construction machinery has been operating at night to lay conduit lines and work on electrics.
The project focuses on broadening the runway and renewing/expanding the instrument landing system. For this purpose, the airport will be closed from 17 to 30 September. The air traffic controllers of DFS Aviation Services are facing challenging times during and after the construction work. The new expanded runway lighting, an additional low-visibility take-off procedure and a precision approach procedure for easterly winds present new procedural and technical challenges. These innovations will make the approach to Memmingen Airport easier for its users.
All measures are planned to be completed in 2020.
DFS Aviation Services has provided air navigation services at Memmingen Airport since 2007. Meanwhile, the company employs eight air traffic controllers to handle take-offs and landings at this ambitious airport in the south of Germany.
