DFS advises Latvian air navigation service provider on their control tower design

DFS Aviation Services and its parent company DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung supported the Latvian air navigation service provider with the planning of their new tower at Riga Airport by contributing their expert opinion on an architectural competition.

The Latvian air navigation service provider Latvijas Gaisa Satiksme (LGS) is planning the construction of a new tower for Riga Airport. At the end of 2017, LGS announced a competition for a design concept. During this process, LGS asked the DFS Group for support in the evaluation of the submitted sketch designs. Prior to that, DFS Aviation Services had conducted a preliminary study on the project, which formed the basis of the competition.

The objective of the competition was to find a high-quality architectural solution and a functionally well-developed sketch design for the air traffic control tower while making the optimal use of financial resources. The construction of the new tower is scheduled to be completed by the end of the 2023. Plans have also been made to equip the new tower with remote tower solutions at a later date.

The deadline for submitting design proposals was 12 March. The DFS Group helped evaluate the sketch designs by contributing its expertise gained from constructing its own range of towers and its operational know-how of remote tower control. Matthias Hieronimus (DFS Aviation Services) supported the expert commission and Stephan Huber (Head of the DFS Building Projects division) advised the jury on site. The jury comprised well-known architects as well as representatives from the airport and the Latvian air navigation service provider.
