Capacity

Historically, aircraft traffic has demonstrated resilience to external shocks, doubling approximately every 15 years. To accommodate this growth, adequate capacity is essential, whether on the airfield or in the airspace. The ultimate goal is to assess the existing system, identify constraints, and provide customized recommendations for improvements and capacity optimization. DFS Group offers support for executing capacity studies and making subsequent recommendations for capacity enhancements.

Green Flying

The aviation industry has the goal of carbon-neutral growth. DAS can tailor the following inititatives to your specific environment:

  • Performance Based Navigation (PBN) enhances efficiency and reduces environmental impact.
  • Continuous Descent Operation (CDO) STARs minimize engine power during descent.
  • Increased glideslope approaches reduce noise.
  • Noise abatement minimizes noise impact during arrivals and departures.
Safety Management

ATS providers must implement a Safety Management System (SMS). This SMS consists of four pillars: Safety policy and objectives, Safety risk management, Safety assurance, Safety promotion. These pillars encompass safety policies, risk management, performance monitoring, and safety promotion efforts. Success lies in adopting a holistic view that considers both the ATM functional system and organizational elements within the air traffic environment.

Simulation

Simulation techniques play a crucial role in understanding real-life operations. We employ two complementary approaches:

  • Fast-Time Simulation (FTS) accelerates models, generating extensive output data for analysis. While FTS provides accurate representations of operations, it lacks Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) integration.
  • Real-Time Simulation (RTS) creates an artificial work environment for ATS OPS personnel, allowing detailed investigation of the human-machine interface.

We assist in planning and executing successful FTS and RTS tasks at the customer’s simulator.

Study to increase airfield capacity

Latin America

Air traffic services need to accompany in the road of growth within an airport Master Plan. The project therefore consisted in studying six areas related with air traffic services (Airspace, Air Traffic Services, A-SMGCS, ATM Systems, Navaids, and the National Strategic Plan) which have a direct impact in the airfield capacity. The aim was to examine the status-quo, identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement, and provide customised recommendations for improvement in an action plan. The outcome of the project were 48 categorised actions for improvement.

CAT I/II GLS approaches to Frankfurt International Airport

Frankfurt am Main, Germany

The GLS enhances precision approaches using  GBAS. By transmitting correction data from a ground station, GLS improves GPS accuracy and integrity. Frankfurt International Airport approves both Category I and Category II GLS approaches, reducing noise exposure while maintaining capacity. DFS implemented this new procedure in collaboration with the Frankfurt Air Noise Commission.

Studies to identify areas for improvement to increase the airfield capacity

America

A major airport in America with two parallel runways wants to grow further to achieve the plans defined within its Master Plan. Necessarily this means that air traffic services need to accompany in this road of growth, so that it can operate more than the current over 300,000 annual aircraft movements.

DFS Aviation Services was contracted to accomplish these works for the air navigation service provider, through direct observation on-site, study of the operational documentation, and expert judgement from the experience of DFS Group in air traffic control at busy airports and airspaces. The outcome of the project were 48 actions for improvement, which were categorised into short, medium and long-term, and then prioritised, for the air navigation services provider to put realise them.
