A major airport in America with two parallel runways wants to grow further to achieve the plans defined within its Master Plan. Necessarily this means that air traffic services need to accompany in this road of growth, so that it can operate more than the current over 300,000 annual aircraft movements.
The project therefore consisted in studying six areas related with air traffic services (Airspace, Air Traffic Services, A-SMGCS, ATM Systems, Navaids, and the National Strategic Plan) which have a direct impact in the airfield capacity. The aim was to examine the status-quo, identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement, and provide customised recommendations for improvement in an action plan.
DFS Aviation Services was contracted to accomplish these works for the air navigation service provider, through direct observation on-site, study of the operational documentation, and expert judgement from the experience of DFS Group in air traffic control at busy airports and airspaces. The outcome of the project were 48 actions for improvement, which were categorised into short, medium and long-term, and then prioritised, for the air navigation services provider to put realise them.
