ATFCM

Air Traffic Flow and Capacity Management (ATFCM) is a complementary service to ATC. Its objective is to optimize traffic flows based on ATC capacity while ensuring safe and efficient airline operations. DFS Aviation Services offers tailored courses, covering topics such as creating new traffic flow measures, understanding ATFCM systems and tools, clarifying the ATFCM-airport connection, addressing safety hazards, implementing enhanced procedures, and providing certificates of participation to successful participants.

Engineering Consultancy

DFS Aviation Services provides consulting on technical engineering topics related to aviation. Specifically, we assist with ATM tasks related to the transfer of new technologies in ATM, ensuring compliance with international and community SES regulations. Our expertise includes setting up Remote Tower solutions, Airport CDM, MLAT, and other ATM applications. Our specialized personnel tailor their advice to your specific concerns or requests, recognizing that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach in the diverse field of engineering.

Future ATM/ATS Technology

DFS Group boasts extensive experience in developing and implementing advanced ATM systems, including their own systems like iCAS. Their expertise spans Tower, Approach, and Area Control Units. With a global track record supporting ANSPs, DFS Aviation Services offers valuable insights, aligning with ICAO standards. Each ATM/ATS technology project is unique, and their tailored approach involves reviewing the current scenario, envisioning the future, analyzing requirements, and evaluating outcomes.

GBAS

Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS), a satellite-based precision approach landing system, is poised to replace the current Instrumental Landing System (ILS) due to its increased precision and cost-effectiveness. GBAS works in conjunction with satellite-based GPS navigation. Notably, a single GBAS Ground Station can serve multiple runways at an airport. DFS Group, a key driver of GBAS implementation, operates multiple stations across Germany. Leveraging their expertise, DFS Aviation Services offers comprehensive support during the transition from ILS to GBAS.

RIAS

The Runway Incursion Alerting System (RIAS) enhances runway safety through an automated “safety net.” Developed jointly by DFS and Fraport, RIAS prevents unintended runway entry or crossing. It fully complies with ICAO, EASA, and SESAR guidelines. DFS Aviation Services offers consulting for an independent Runway Safety Study, including operational and technical concepts for tower integration and field sensors.

System Transition

DFS Aviation Services, with extensive experience in managing various transitions, ensures seamless changes without disrupting operations. A dedicated task force, including transition, training, and safety managers, motivates users and ensures acceptance. Clear task packages promote transparency, responsibility, and efficiency. System transition planning should begin six months to a year in advance. Core tasks include project management, change management, familiarisation, training, OPS briefings, system testing, and fallback management.

Signal Protection Study

Bahrain

The project aimed to create a restricted area around VHF communication sites in Bahrain to prevent signal loss. DFS provided guidelines for building heights and locations, ensuring both signal protection and land development. The local ANSP used this evidence for policy decisions.

RIAS Safety Management

Frankfurt, Germany

Fraport AG and DFS collaborated to enhance runway safety at Frankfurt International Airport . The project aimed to reduce runway infringements caused by unnoticed aircraft, vehicles, or people on the runway. The RIAS Concept included in-field detection sensors, ATC controller alerts, and alerts for pilots and drivers. After successful trials, RIAS was implemented across EDDF with success.

System Transition

ATM System Transition due to relocation

Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs, BCAA

The Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs (BCAA) has been planning to move its existing ATS facilities and services to new premises. Indra decided to rely on the experience and know-how of DAS for the development of the Safety Case documentation for the change implementation of the entire new iCAS (iTEC Centre Automation Systems) ATM system, the training plan for the operational staff and the required transition. The DAS Safety Case conducted in close collaboration between DAS and DFS Aviation Services Bahrain aimed at ensuring that the safety standards required by the BCAA were maintained. The hazards arising from the changes to be made were systematically identified and a strategy to manage the safety risks arising from the consequences of the hazards was subsequently developed, implemented and evaluated.
